Crypto prop trading 24/7: how to trade crypto on a funded account
Crypto never closes, and on a Core Funded account you don't have to either. Here is how crypto CFDs, 1:5 leverage and the loss limits work around the clock.
Crypto prop trading means trading cryptocurrencies with a prop firm's capital instead of your own. At Core Funded you trade crypto CFDs on a simulated funded account, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, including weekends. You keep 80% of the profit by default, up to 95% with an upgrade, and you can choose to be paid by bank transfer or in crypto.
The 24/7 part changes how you trade. Forex and indices close on Friday evening; crypto keeps moving. This guide explains what that means for your leverage, your daily loss limit, your trading days and your payouts.
What crypto prop trading at Core Funded looks like
You do not buy coins. You trade CFDs on crypto prices on Match-Trader, the platform every Core Funded account runs on. Crypto sits on the same account as forex, indices and commodities, so there is no separate crypto-only account to buy. You pick an account type, and crypto is one of the markets you can trade on it.
The crypto list on Match-Trader includes the large pairs such as BTCUSD, ETHUSD, SOLUSD, XRPUSD, ADAUSD, LTCUSD and BNBUSD, euro pairs such as BTCEUR and ETHEUR, and the cross ETHBTC, among others.
Everything you know from the other markets applies here too: buy and sell, stop loss and take profit, pending orders, TradingView charts. Spreads and commissions are variable and depend on the instrument and market conditions.
24/7 trading and weekend holding
Crypto can be traded around the clock, including Saturday and Sunday. Holding positions overnight and over the weekend is allowed on every account type, without restrictions.
That gives you two ways to use the weekend:
- Trade it. When forex is closed, crypto is still open. If you have a job during the week, the weekend may be your main trading time.
- Hold through it. A swing position opened on Thursday can stay open through Sunday.
Weekend days also count as trading days. If you make at least 0.5% net realized profit on a Saturday by trading crypto, that Saturday is a qualifying day towards your minimum trading days, exactly like a Tuesday would be.
And because every Core Funded account has no time limit, you are never forced to trade a weekend or rush a setup. The only activity rule is that an account with no trade at all for 30 days is closed.
Leverage on crypto: 1:5
Leverage on forex, indices and commodities is 1:100. On crypto it is 1:5. With $1 of equity you can move $5 in a crypto position.
Lower leverage does not mean lower risk per move. It means each position ties up more margin. A crypto position with a notional value of $50,000 needs $10,000 in margin at 1:5. The same notional on a forex pair would need $500 at 1:100.
What protects your account are the loss limits, and those are measured in dollars, not in margin. That is why sizing matters more than leverage.
The loss limits, applied to crypto
Crypto has no separate rule set. The same limits apply as on any other market:
| Account type | Profit target | Max daily loss | Max total loss | Crypto leverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instant | None | 3% | 5% | 1:5 |
| 1-Step | 10% | 3% | 6% | 1:5 |
| 2-Step | 10% / 5% | 5% | 8% | 1:5 |
| 2-Step Flex | 10% / 5% | None | 12% | 1:5 |
Max daily loss around the clock
At 00:00 UTC every day, the higher of your balance or your equity is taken, and the daily limit (a fixed percentage of the original account size) is subtracted from it. That level is your floor for the day. Unrealized losses on open trades count, and if equity falls below the floor, the account is stopped.
This reset happens every day, also on Saturday and Sunday. If you hold a crypto position over the weekend, it is measured against a new daily floor at each midnight UTC.
The 2-Step Flex challenge has no daily loss limit at all, which can suit crypto positions that swing a lot within a day. Flex is available up to $100,000.
Max total loss is static
The max total loss is a static drawdown: it is set once from your starting balance and never moves up with your profits. On a $100,000 2-Step account the floor stays at $92,000 from start to finish. Open crypto positions count against it.
Worked example: a weekend BTC trade on $100,000
You trade a $100,000 2-Step account: 5% max daily loss ($5,000), 8% max total loss (floor $92,000). On Friday you buy BTCUSD with a notional value of $50,000.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Position size (notional) | $50,000 |
| Margin needed at 1:5 | $10,000 |
| BTC move needed to lose $5,000 (daily limit) | 10% |
| BTC move needed to lose $8,000 (total limit, from a flat account) | 16% |
On Saturday at 00:00 UTC your balance is $100,000 and the open position shows +$1,000, so equity is $101,000. The higher value is equity, so your daily floor for Saturday is $101,000 − $5,000 = $96,000. If BTC then falls 6% during Saturday, your position goes from +$1,000 to −$2,000 and equity drops to $98,000. That is above the $96,000 floor and above the $92,000 total floor, so the account is fine.
Now take the same trade with twice the size, $100,000 notional, on an Instant account with a 3% daily limit. A 3% move against you already costs $3,000, which is the whole daily limit. Same coin, same leverage, very different risk. Size your crypto positions from the loss limit backwards, not from the available margin.
Other rules that apply to crypto
- Hedging on the same account is allowed. Martingale strategies are not.
- Stop loss is not mandatory, but with 24/7 markets it is how you stay in control while you sleep.
- EAs and trade copiers are allowed. Copy trading is only allowed between accounts of the same legal holder, and every rule applies to each account individually.
- News trading is fully allowed in the challenge. On a funded account, by default no trades may be opened or closed from 5 minutes before to 5 minutes after high-impact news and FOMC events; this applies to the whole account, crypto included. The optional News Trading upgrade at checkout removes that window.
- Consistency rule: at payout, no single day may make up more than 15% (Instant) or 30% (1-Step, 2-Step) of your total profit. Big weekend days count like any other day.
Getting paid in crypto
When you request a payout in Match-Trader, you choose bank transfer or crypto. Both are paid within 24 hours; if a payout takes longer, you keep 100% of the profit on that payout. You can read the full process, including the minimum trading days and how much you can request at once, on the payouts page.
If crypto is your main market, the crypto prop firm page sums up the account types side by side.
